Using Black Soldier Fly to Solve Kampala’s Waste Management Challenge

An agricultural innovation is collecting organic waste from the streets of Uganda’s capital Kampala, and feeding it to the Black Soldier Fly, whose larvae is used to as protein for animal and poultry feed. 

Sanitation is a major challenge for most African cities. About 28,000 tons of waste is collected and delivered to a landfill every month. Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) records show that this represents approximately 40% of the waste generated in the city.
