Alex Ocheing is becoming a household name in Uganda’s capital Kampala and for creating a safe haven for street dogs and other homeless pets.
Street pets are part of the city’s social fabric and history, and pause a great risk to its residents. Around 2016, city authorities reported that at least 300 schoolchildren were bitten by street dogs in a space of three months.
Around the same time, authorities rolled out a program to poison all city dogs. However, Ochieng thinks differently. Rhonet Atwiine visited the animal rehabilitation center.
