Food prices in Uganda have hit their highest in recent months. Datasets at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) suggest that the largest percentage of food consumed in Kampala and most urban areas is purchased from the market.
Own food production has also fallen from 45% in 2016 to 33% in 2021, the UBOS says.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has been pushing for urban farming initiatives as a measure to feed growing city populations.
Partrick Lubega is one of the few urban dwellers trying out the initiative. Our reporter visited his home in Kabojja, just outside Uganda’s capital Kampala.
